Philip Dunn has a blog post in which he demonstrates that his Canon G9 optical viewfinder is misaligned. Mine has the exact same problem.
The diagram above is supposed to represent the optical viewfinder. The blue square, in the center of the crosshairs, is where you would expect the center of the photo to be. But in fact, the red circle, at the bottom of the top crosshair, is the location of the true center of the photo. (Note, that the above diagram is not drawn to scale. The crosshairs are smaller in the real viewfinder, so the diagram exaggerates the extent to which the viewfinder is misaligned.)
Another example of poor Canon quality control. But now that I know about the bug, I can use the viewfinder to aim the camera correctly.
I haven't got my hands yet on a G9 but it seems to me that if you compose the picture in the viewfinder and then tilt the camera towards 2 o'clock on a clock face-you will reduce the problem. Do I have it right?

Re G9 lopsided viewfinder, it seems to me that if you tilt the camera towards 2 o'clock on a clock face-some of the problem will be solved.
The amount of correction may depend on the focal length.
